History of Fahey & Walsh

The practice now known as Fahey & Walsh has been providing reliable, quality services to the people of the Burdekin and surrounds for over 100 years. This is how the company evolved over those years.

1922 – 1928

B.S. Donovan

 

Mr. B.S. (Bernie) Donovan

Mr. B.S. (Bernie) Donovan commenced the business in Ayr in the early 1920’s. The firm was involved in real estate, insurance and accountancy.

1928 – 1947

Mr. C.C. (Charlie) McCarthy

Mr. B.S. (Bernie) Donovan was joined by Mr. C.C. (Charlie) McCarthy in 1928 as a partner.

1947 – 1953

Mr. M. (Mick) Donovan

Mr. B.S. (Bernie) Donovan died in 1947, and his interest was taken over by Mr. M. (Mick) Donovan, his son, who had been an employee of the firm.

1953

Mr. D.J. (Dave) O’Brien

Mr. C.C. (Charlie) McCarthy sold his interest to Mr. D.J. (Dave) O’Brien in 1953 and retired to Brisbane. Mr O’Brien had previously working in the Taxation Office and conducted an accountancy practice in Maryborough and Pittsworth before moving to Ayr.

1953 – 1955

D.J. O’Brien

    Mr. M. (Mick) Donovan retired from the practice in 1953. Mr. D.J. (Dave) O’Brien continued as a sole trader until 1955.

1955 – 1963

Mr. F.J. (Frank) Fahey

Mr. D.J. (Dave) O’Brien sold an interest in the firm to Mr. F.J. (Frank) Fahey on the 1st July 1955 and they traded in partnership until 1963.

1963 – 1977

O’Brien & Fahey

Mr. D.J. (Dave) O’Brien sold his interest of the firm to Mr. F.J. (Frank) Fahey on 30th June 1963 and retired to Brisbane. Mr. F.J. (Frank) Fahey continued as a sole trader until 1977.

1977 – 1984

Mr. A.F. (Tony) Ponti

Mr. A.F. (Tony) Ponti joined Mr. F.J. (Frank) Fahey as a partner of the firm on 1st July 1977.

1984 – 1987

Mr. J.F. (Jim) Fahey

Mr. J.F. (Jim) Fahey joined the firm on 1st July 1983 with the partner’s being Mr. Frank Fahey, Mr. Jim Fahey & Mr. Tony Ponti.

1987 – 1991

Mr. K. (Kris) Hansen

On the 1st July 1987, the firm changed its name to Fahey & Ponti and opened a full-time office in Townsville. The Bowen practice of Illingworth Partners was purchased and Mr. K. (Kris) Hansen was admitted as a partner. The Bowen firm was called Fahey, Ponti & Hansen.

1991 – 2005

Mr. A.F. (Tony) Ponti, Mr. J.F. (Jim) Fahey & Mr. K. (Kris) Hansen

On the 1st July 1991, Mr. F.J. (Frank) Fahey retired and Mr. K. (Kris) Hansen was admitted as a partner in all branches, with all trading under the name Fahey & Ponti. The partners were Mr. Tony Ponti, Mr. Jim Fahey & Mr. Kris Hansen.

2005 – 2013

On the 1st July 2005, Mr. A.A. (Anthony) Ponti was admitted as a partner in all branches. Partners in all branches were Mr. Tony Ponti, Mr. Jim Fahey, Mr. Kris Hansen & Mr. Anthony Ponti.

2013 – 2015

Fahey & Ponti

In 2013, Mr. A.A. (Anthony) Ponti retired from the Ayr practice and traded as a sole trader in Townsville. Mr. K. (Kris) Hansen also retired from the Ayr practice and continued trading in Bowen with Mr. J.F. (Jim) Fahey under the name Rekenen Pty Ltd.

On 1st July 2013, Mrs K.J. (Kayleen) Walsh, who was an employee of the firm, was admitted as a partner in Ayr with partners in Ayr being Mrs. Kayleen Walsh, Mr. Tony Ponti & Mr. Jim Fahey.

2015 – 2022

Mr. J.F. (Jim) Fahey & Mrs. K.J. (Kayleen) Walsh

On 1st July 2015, Mr. A.F. (Tony) Ponti retired from the practice.

Mr. J.F. (Jim) Fahey and Mrs. K.J. (Kayleen) Walsh continued trading in partnership and the firm changed its name to Fahey & Walsh.

2022 – Current

In December 2022, Mrs. K.J. (Kayleen) Walsh became sole director of the practice.

Mr. J.F. (Jim) Fahey remained with the firm as Managing Consultant until his retirement in December 2023.
